The Future of Architecture in Malaysia

To me, architecture does not only represent the identity of a country; it also represents who the people are. The social lifestyle and cultural values of the people is one of the main factors which caused the emergence of different styles in architecture in a country.

As a Malaysian who lives in a multicultural society, I always have a sense of belonging when it comes to architecture which are historical and influenced by the local culture. Therefore I strongly believe, not only me, but other Malaysians too, value the heritage buildings in Malaysia, which shows their love for the nation. This can be proven through the incident where the Pudu Jail was to be demolished and many Malaysians stood up for this issue, regardless of how the result will turn out to be like. Many of us would want to preserve our own heritage buildings but at the same time, you want architecture that can complement and fit in into our modern lifestyles nowadays. Therefore I predict that the future architecture would be hybrids, which is a combination of old and new. Perhaps Malaysia would be a place where cultural influenced buildings are built with a touch of modernism; not so complex and rich in culture like the ones we had in the past but somehow simple yet could also represent our root, and where we belong.
